OMNI Medical Center 's 5 Worst Holiday Treats

Christmas may be over...but the New Year's celebrations are just around the corner!

That's why OMNI Medical Center has come up with a list of the 5 Worst Holiday Treats ... to keep you on your best behavior while you're ringing in the New Year (and while you're on your hCG diet !)

Here are the 5 foods & drinks you should try to stay away from:

1) Worst cocktail:

Gin and tonic (8 ounces)
240 calories
22 g sugar

Did you know that light and bubbly tonic water many people love to add to their drinks contains as much sugar as two glazed donuts? Consider a diet tonic... or calorie-free seltzer water instead.

2) Worst dip:

Spinach and artichoke dip (1/2 cup serving)
300 calories
19 g fat

Sorry to rain on your parade...but the wrong dip can transform healthy veggies and a whole grain pita into vessels for fat and hundreds of extra calories! Avoid creamy, cheesy dips at all costs and stick to tomato-based salsas and bruschetta, which are low-calorie and offer a healthy serving of vegetables.

3) Worst Side Dish:

Baked potato with butter and sour cream (1 medium spud)
400 calories
14 g fat (6 g saturated)

If you add bacon and cheese to your hot potato dish, you'll also be packing in an extra 150 calories. Try eating just the potato skins... and using 5 squirts of "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" spray. This will give you that buttery fix... but save you from splurging on excess fat & calories.

4) Worst Hot Drink:

White chocolate mocha (20 ounces)
660 calories
22 g fat (15 g saturated)
95 g sugar
Sugary coffee concoctions can be a holiday staple for many of us—but the wrong one could deliver more calories than a Big Mac! Avoid mochas, lattes and cappuccinos and order a small coffee with a dash of almond milk and a spurt of sugar-free flavored syrup instead.

5) Worst Dessert:

Pecan pie à la mode (one small slice)
810 calories
65 g fat
55 g sugar

In the wide world of holiday pies, nothing is worse than a slice of pecan. If you absolutely have to have a sweet treat, angel food cake makes an ideal dessert. It's light, low in calories and virtually fat-free. Fresh fruit is even better.

OMNI Medical Center Suggests You Pump Some Iron...Into Your Diet!

Did you know? The most common nutrient deficiency in the U.S. is (insert drum roll)... iron deficiency!

This is especially prevalent in women and sometimes in patients who are following a medical weight loss program or hCG diet.

With that in mind, here are 3 helpful ideas from OMNI Medical Center for getting some extra iron into your daily routine:

--Eat more iron-rich foods. That means adding more red meat, seafood, shellfish, and chicken to your diet (especially if you're on the OMNI Medical Center hCG program)!

--Try to cut back on foods/beverages that block your absorption of iron. This includes coffee, tea, milk, and soy protein.

--Add some iron supplements to your regimen. OMNI Medical Center has a great Ferronyl-C supplement. It's made with both iron and Vitamin C (Vitamin C helps your body absorb iron more efficiently).

OMNI Medical Center Wants To Help You Control Your "Inner Grinch" This Holiday Season With These 5 Feel Good Foods That Are Also Good For Your Waistline!

The Grinch Stole Christmas Glitter | PunjabiGraphics.com

The Holidays can a wonderful time of giving... and GAINING!

We at OMNI Medical Center recommend a few foods that naturally stimulate our own production of Serotonin.  Serotonin is key in the regulation of appetite, mood, and melatonin production It acts as a calming agent in the brain and aids in healthy sleep patterns.

Serotonin also acts as a satiety signal in the brain, thereby naturally regulating food intake along with reducing our cravings, especially sweets.

So bring on the Christmas cheer and give that Grinch a grin with these tasty treats (and enjoy wearing those "skinny jeans" to the mall)!!!

    • Lean Turkey and Chicken Breast - Poultry, especially turkey contains Tryptophan. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid found in foods and helps our bodies to produce the Serotonin we desperately need. So, go ahead, enjoy that Holiday turkey. (And, the nap that may come later!)
    • Flaxseed Oil and Olive Oil - Great sources of Omega 3's and an excellent way to add flavor to our foods while providing essential nutrients our bodies need!. It only takes a little and your taste buds will thank you a lot!
    • Avocado -  A "fruit" full of good fats of Orange Juice!
    • Almonds - An amazing little snack packed with calcium and the ability to be used in a million different ways! Top your favorite salad, poultry, or vegetable dish with these sliced treats. Or, just grab a handful on the go, because let's face it... they're delicious!
    • Fruit - Fresh Fruit, especially berries, are loaded with anti-oxidants to help boost our immune systems as we battle the cold... and our sweet cravings! Pairing fruit with your protein is an excellent way to maximize the benefits of both. (Want an extra tip? Eat your fruit prior to your protein to boost your metabolism. Your body will thank you!)

OMNI Medical Center wishes you and yours a wonderful Holiday Season!

OMNI Medical Center says, "It's Okay to Be a (Weight) Loser!"

Losing weight around the holiday season can be tough, especially when you're following an hCG diet

So here are a few tips from OMNI Medical Center to help with your weight loss results!

    1) When in doubt, opt for salad!
Salads are an excellent example of high nutrient density meals that help you shed those extra pounds on your medical weight loss diet. The vegetables in a garden salad have a high ratio of nutrition to calories. In other words, you get lots of nutrition for very few calories.
High nutrient density meals such as salad allow you to eat more, satisfy your appetite and stick to a healthy weight loss plan (especially the OMNI Medical Center medical weight loss program).

    2. Get Your Health Benefits from Taking Antioxidants!

These are items you can find in your supermarket that can add important nutritional elements to your meals. For example, romaine and red leaf lettuce, spinach and arugula are all excellent sources of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant nutrients, such as carotenoids and phenolics (Our OMNI Medical Center staff likes to find these at our local Fresh Market).
Eating more carotenoids could even make you better looking, according to the latest nutrition research!

    3. Give yourself that instant nutrition boost your body is looking for!
The positive effects on your body start right away. For several hours after you a eat large bowl of fresh romaine lettuce, there is a significant increase in your blood of:
    -Total antioxidant activity
    -Vitamin C
    -Beta-carotene
-Quercetin (which is an important bioflavonoid)
    -Phenolics

These 3 tips can help boost your weight loss, and have you looking and feeling healthier in no time!

    Have a heart-healthy holiday week!
