'See' Salt...and Reduce Your Daily Intake! OMNI Medical Center 's 5 Tips for Lowering Sodium Consumption

Many of us know that too much sodium can be a bad thing...Among other things, too much salt in your diet can cause you to retain water, which can in turn delay your weight loss results if you're trying to shed those extra pounds.

The recommended daily intake of sodium for healthy Americans is currently 2,300 mg and 1,500 mg for "at-risk" individuals (such as people living with Hypertension). Unfortunately, many of us aren't aware that just one frozen meal (or TV dinner) packs in almost 1,000 mg...that's nearly half of your recommended intake for the day in just one meal (and excluding your snacks)!

The bad news...the average American consumes 3,000-6,000 mg of salt in a day (which is why our OMNI Medical Center wellness consultants do not allow frozen meals)!
The good news, however, is that reducing your sodium consumption can also help lower your blood pressure, which can also decrease your risk of heart disease.
With that in mind, here are 5 helpful ways OMNI Medical Center recommends you do in order to lower your salt intake, and increase your weight loss:

1. Remove the salt shaker from your dinner table. You may think you are just sprinkling a little salt on, but before you know it you have added a day's worth of sodium. Without it in reach, you won't give yourself the option.

2. Reduce your intake of processed and pre-prepared foods. Sodium is added to packaged, canned and frozen foods, not just for flavor but also as a preservative, keeping the food shelf-stable for a longer period of time. Make sure to take time in the supermarket to check food labels for words like "low-sodium," "no salt added" and "low salt" on canned and packaged items, such as canned broth and soups, canned vegetables, prepared frozen dinners and cold cuts.

3. Start reading the sodium content on the nutrition facts labels of the foods you buy/eat. This is the best way to be aware of how much sodium you are eating while paying special attention to serving size.

4. If you can help it, steer clear of processed foods and choose fresh instead. This can drastically decrease your sodium intake. Fresh meats, legumes, unsalted nuts, dairy, fruits and vegetables all contain very little sodium, therefore making them wise choices in a low sodium diet.

5. If and when you are using canned products (such as beans), make sure to choose the reduced or low-sodium versions. If these are not available, you can also reduce their sodium by up to 40%  rinsing and draining the beans in a colander before eating them.

Because monitoring our daily intake of salt is an important factor in maintaining good health long term, we must always remember moderation is key.
By incorporating a few of these easy steps from OMNI Medical Center, you will be on your way to spot hidden sodium so that it does not wreck havoc on your health any longer, and doesn't hinder your weight loss results.

Here's to smaller portions of sodium-filled food, and larger weight loss results when you step on the scale!

Less is M'organic...OMNI Medical Center's List of Top Foods You Should Always Buy Organic

More and more scientists are beginning to agree that certain doses of pesticides and other chemicals can possibly cause damage to human health, especially during fetal development and early childhood.

That's why many of the foods we consider 'staples' at home should be purchased in organic form only, especially if your goal is to see big results on your hcg weight loss program.

Here's a small list of OMNI Medical Center 's recommendations for foods other than fruits and vegetables that are best bought organic in order to reduce our consumption of antibiotics, hormones:

--Meat. To meet USDA standards, certified organic meat can come only from animals fed organic feed and given no hormones or antibiotics. Buying cuts from only grass-fed animals ensures that you're eating meat from an animal that was fed a more natural diet, rather than food treated with pesticides, hormones, or antibiotics.
--Milk. Pesticides and other synthetic chemicals have been found in many dairy products -- milk is of special concern because it is a common part of a children's diets. Organic dairies cannot feed their cows with grains grown with pesticides, nor can they use antibiotics or growth hormones like rGBH or rbST. At OMNI Medical Center we recommend almond milk for our patients as well as their children.
--Celery. Because it has no protective skin, it's almost impossible to wash off the chemicals used on this conventional veggie. Buy organic celery to ensure you're not having any pesticides or synthetic chemicals with your greens.
--Peaches. Multiple pesticides are regularly applied to these delicately skinned fruits in conventional orchards.Purchase non-treated fruits from your local farmer's market or organic grocery store.
--Strawberries. If you buy strawberries when they are out of season, they are most likely imported from countries that use less-stringent regulations for pesticide use.
--Apples. Similar to peaches, apples are typically grown with the use of poisons to kill a variety of pests from fungi to insects. Scrubbing and peeling them doesn't necessarily eliminate chemical residue completely, so it's best to buy organic when it comes to apples (our OMNI Medical Center wellness consultants always keep organic apples from the Fresh Market in our break room!).
--Spinach. This favorite of Popeye can be laced with almost 50 different pesticides, which makes it one of the most contaminated green leafy vegetables.
--Grapes. Imported grapes run a much greater risk of contamination than those grown domestically. Vineyards can be sprayed with different pesticides during different growth periods of the grape, and no amount of washing or peeling will eliminate contamination because of the grape's thin skin.

Hit Me with Your Best Shot (of Botox!)...Cosmetic Injectables Available at OMNI Medical Center

What is Botox?
Botox Cosmetic is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles to temporarily treat moderate to severe frown lines between the brows of adults 18 to 65 years of age.

How long does Botox last?
Botox can typically last up to four months (our patients at OMNI Medical Center usually come back every 3 to 4 months), but results may vary from patient to patient.

How do I know if I need Botox?
Botox is typically recommended for men and women who have wrinkles or fine lines as a result of years of squinting, concentrating, or frowning. This causes the skin to furrow and crease, which can sometimes makes us look angry and/or unapproachable.

How can I get started with Botox?
Ask our medical professionals at OMNI Medical Center if Botox is right for you. We can schedule you an appointment for a complimentary consultation and have you looking and feeling your best in no time.

To schedule your complimentary consultation contact us at: (678)788.8000 or visit us at: omnimedicalctr.com

Here's to fewer frown lines and more happy faces!

Fit for a...'Quinoa!' OMNI Medical Center 's Quinoa con Pollo Recipe

If you’re looking for a highly nutritious low-carb dish to eat that’s not only going to help you stay lean, but will also boost your energy levels, look no further… quinoa really does have it all!

Here's OMNI Medical Center 's latest recipe: quinoa con pollo (quinoa with chicken, that is!).

What you need:
-4 large garlic cloves (or more)
-1 medium onion, chopped
-1/2 green bell pepper, chopped
-1/2 red bell pepper, chopped
-1 1/2 cups of low sodium chicken broth or homemade stock
-1 tbsp white vinegar
-1 1/4 tbsp dried oregano, crumbled
-1 tsp white pepper
-1/2 tsp salt (add to taste; I just don't use a lot)
-2 tsp ground cumin
-1 tsp ground turmeric
-1 tsp paprika
-1 bay leaf
-1 tomato, diced (optional)
-1/2 bag of frozen peas and carrots (or just peas, but carrots add sweetness)
-2 to 3 chicken breasts (boneless, skinless, and cut into cubes or chopped)
-2 tsp olive oil
-1 cup quinoa

What you do:
-Toast quinoa in 2 tsp. olive oil in either paella pan or sauteeing pan--about 8 minutes over medium heat.

-While toasting, combine liquids and seasonings in measuring cup or bowl...stir and set aside.

-Increase heat to medium high. Add onions, peppers, bay leaf, and garlic to quinoa. Saute for 3 minutes, stirring constantly.

-Add broth, vegetables, and cubed/chopped chicken and stir. Make sure quinoa is covered (may add broth by tablespoons if more is needed). Bring to a boil.

-Reduce heat to medium low (depending on stove), cover, and simmer until broth is absorbed--about 20-25 minutes.

-You may want to vent the lid in last 5-10 minutes so the peas don't overcook, or you can add the peas and carrots later.

-Adjust the seasonings to taste.Serve when cooked and enjoy!

H-2-Oh! Why OMNI Medical Center Wants You to Stay Hydrated!

With temperatures still in the 90s (or higher in some parts of the country!), it's definitely important to stay hydrated while you're on the OMNI Medical Center weight loss program.

According to the Mayo Clinic, water is your body's principal chemical component and makes up about 60% of your body weight. Every system in your body depends on water.

Water flushes toxins out of vital organs, carries nutrients to your cells, and provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues.

Lack of water can lead to dehydration (which is a condition that occurs when you don't have enough water in your body to carry out normal functions). Even mild dehydration can drain your energy and make you tired.

So how much water do we need to drink daily? Every day we lose water through our breath, sweat, urine and bowel movements. For our bodies to function properly, we must replenish our own water supply by consuming beverages and foods that contain water.

The Institute of Medicine (as well as our wellness consultants at OMNI Medical Center ) advises that men consume roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total beverages a day and women consume 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total beverages a day.

Even apart from the above approaches, if you drink enough fluid so that you rarely feel thirsty and produce 1.5 liters (6.3 cups) or more of colorless or slightly yellow urine a day, your fluid intake is probably adequate.

If you're concerned about your fluid intake, you can check with one of OMNI Medical Center's doctors or one of our medical weight loss professionals. He or she can help you determine the amount of water that's best for you.

For more information you can also visit us at: omnimedicalctr.com.
Cheers to more water, less dehydration, and even better weight loss results!

Being 'Full of It' is a Good Thing! Try OMNI Medical Center 's Fiber Supplement

Many of us know that getting your daily dose of fiber is supposed to be good for you...but why?

Because it helps you feel fuller longer... and several studies now show fiber seems to help lower cholesterol and triglycerides, while also helping to prevent ulcers, diabetes, heart disease, and even cancer. Consuming fiber can also maximize your weight loss results when you're on a medical weight loss diet.

So how much fiber should we have in a day? The average American only consumes about 14g dietary fiber a day, which is considerably less than the recommended level. Many nutrition experts (including all of us at OMNI Medical Center ) suggest we actually have between 35-50g of fiber a day.

How can I get more fiber into my diet? To add more fiber to what you eat, choose a variety of soluble and insoluble fiber-rich food sources: fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads and cereals, and legumes (beans and peas).

Also keep in mind that brown rice and 100% whole wheat bread are better than white rice or white bread, and eat the skins of your fruits and vegetables whenever possible.

Lastly, add in a fiber supplement, like OMNI Medical Center 's Ultra Fiber. It will keep you regular, and help you stay fuller longer in between your meals. Get your very own bottle of Ultra Fiber today!
